Brian Smallson is a Deputy Legislative Counsel. He joined the office in 2021.

Mr. Smallson is assigned to a branch of the office that handles laws relating to alcoholic beverage control, business, civil law, financial institutions, healing arts, housing and community development, land use, local government, private employment, professions and vocations, public contracts, public employment, retirement, state government, taxation, and unemployment insurance.

Before joining the office, Mr. Smallson served as a deputy commissioner for the Board of Parole Hearings. Prior to that, he served as a staff attorney for the Board of Parole Hearings and as an associate attorney at a private law firm.

Mr. Smallson received his J.D. from the Chapman University Fowler School of Law in 2011. He earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2008.

Mr. Smallson is a member of the California State Bar.
